Javoříčko Caves

Javoříčko Caves

Caves with the richest speleothems in the Czech Republic.

Detailed information

The most extensive cave system of central and northern Moravia is located in the Devonian calcite of the Javoříčko Karst area, to the west from the town of Litovel and near the famous Bouzov Castle.  The underground system of caves consists of a complex network of corridors, caves and abysses with very diverse speleothems.

The first written record of Javoříčko Caves dates from 1873, while a significant part of the system was discovered in 1938. The caves were made accessible to the public in 1939. The total length of all the known corridors exceeds 4 thousand metres with a height difference of 60 metres. There are two tourist trails here, one 800 metres long and the other 450 metres. Air temperature in the caves is 8°C throughout the year and relative humidity is 99%.

The main cave space is the Cave of Giants, measuring 56 metres in length, 34 metres in width and 18 metres in height. In the cave, there are exceptionally beautiful and rich calcite decorations of all kinds and sizes, including stalagmites more than four metre tall. The Detritus Cave with its richly decorated calcite ceiling is especially beautiful. Rare eccentric forms of calcite have developed in the Cave of Peace. Javoříčko Caves are a part of Špraněk National Nature Reserve. The caves are also the largest hibernaculum of bats in the Czech Republic.
