Railway bridge in Prostřední Žleb

Railway bridge in Prostřední Žleb

The highest railway bridge in the Czech Republic. It spans the Elbe between Děčín and Prostřední Žleb.

Detailed information

The railway bridge across the Elbe between Děčín and Prostřední Žleb was built in 1874 by the Austrian Northwestern Railway, which built the Znojmo – Jihlava – Kolín – Lysá nad Labem – Děčín – Prostřední Žleb line in Bohemia.

The bridge is 239.1 metres long, which made it the longest bridge in Bohemia at the time, because it crosses the river at a non-standard angle of approximately 45°. It was reconstructed several times, but its original appearance has been preserved and is still visible. This makes it one of the oldest bridges with original construction in Bohemia. The bridge is characterised by large sandstone pillars, because a double-track line was planned. The other track was never built, but the empty space came in useful in 1927, when the bridge construction was replaced. The bridge currently serves only cargo traffic.
