Saint John’s Bridge

Saint John’s Bridge

The oldest stone bridge in Moravia.

Detailed information

A 16th-century stone bridge in the town of Litovel. It is the oldest stone bridge in Moravia and also the third oldest bridge in the Czech Republic (after Charles Bridge in Prague and the Písek bridge).

The Renaissance stone bridge spans the river Morava north of the historic town of Litovel. It was built in the late 16th century (the first record dates from 1592). The Saint John’s Bridge is 60 metres long and has six arches of different heights and different spans, supported by square pillars. A Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk was placed on the bridge in the middle of the 18th century. The bridge went through its last extensive reconstruction in the late 20th century, after it had been damaged by a large flood in 1997. The monumental bridge in Litovel was inscribed on the list of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic in 1958.
